PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION

The High Point Arts Council is proud to present a new concert series: Songwriters in the Round. These quarterly concerts will feature local singer-songwriter artists that frequent nearby stages and attend the High Point Songwriter’s Circle, led by Jack Gorham.

Please join us Saturday, January 29, from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at Centennial Station Arts Center, to hear some wonderful music as we feature two local acts; singer-songwriter, William Nesmith and The Brown Mountain Lightning Bugs.

From inspiring ballads to bubbly bops, William Nesmith uses his impressive vocal range and unique registers to paint a spectrum of emotions, and if Jerry Garcia and Tom Waits made an Appalachian music duo, it might sound a little like the Brown Mountain Lightning Bugs. Hailing from Winston-Salem, NC Zack and Kendra Harding blend the traditional with the trippy to create original music they like to call folk(ish). You don’t want to miss this brilliant mashup of performers coming to the Songwriters in the Round concert!

Tickets for Songwriters in the Round are $10 and can be purchased online. For more information, contact Hope Barker, Arts Education Coordinator, at education@highpointarts.org or 336-889-2787 ext. 23. The Centennial Station Arts Center is located in downtown High Point at 121 S. Centennial Station Arts Center.

PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION

In 2021 High Point Arts Council introduced the Arts & Culture series, featuring various artists who represent the rich diversity of our community. The arts bring us together to celebrate our differences and highlight our similarities!

Join us on Sunday, February 20, from 2:00 to 3:30 p.m. at Centennial Station Arts Center, as we celebrate Black History Month! The Arts Council is proud to present an African-themed event, with programming provided by the Otesha Creative Arts Ensemble. This afternoon of cultural learning and celebration will feature music, art, clothing, crafts, and stories from various African cultures.

Created in 1972 by Ron Dortch, Gilbert Young, and Queen Mother Amatullah Saleem, The Otesha Creative Arts Ensemble is an iconic presence in the African dance and drumming community. Using traditional West African music and dance, their mission is to “offer a holistic cultural arts experience by following traditions set by [their] ancestors and honor their contributions throughout the African Diaspora." The dancers move in an expression of their inner feelings, their movements are in rhythm to the beat of the Djembe or Congo drums. It is the sound of the music and the rhythms that are played that provide the heartbeat of the dance.

Otesha Creative Arts has a continued legacy of educating, enriching, and inspiring communities both nationally and internationally. The company partnerships between education and entertainment, and has continued its mission to promote culture awareness through arts education across the nation.
